A 1,500-year-old folk art, cut entirely by hand
Chinese paper cutting, or jianzhi, began in the 6th century and is still done the same way today: a single sheet of paper, a small sharp blade, and years of practice. This piece was cut by hand by a folk artisan — no laser, no printing.
What the pattern means
- Peony (牡丹) — the “king of flowers” in Chinese culture, a symbol of prosperity, honour and wealth.
- Butterfly (蝴蝶) — joy, summer, and lasting love.
Red is the colour of good fortune in China, used for weddings, New Year and every celebration.
